RCCC’s Next BIG Project Initiative

The Rotary Club of Carroll Creek’s “Next Big Project” initiative is a funding program designed to support impactful community development. Nonprofit organizations and public agencies are invited to propose “Brick and Mortar” projects that align with the Rotary’s mission to enhance the local community. Projects are evaluated based on their feasibility, sustainability, visibility, and necessity.

Past projects funded through this initiative include transformative developments such as the PAL Center gymnasium, the revitalization of the Baker Park Bandshell, the Frederick Health Pediatric Ward’s “Splashes of Hope” mural project, Carroll Creek Linear Park Community Bridge improvements, the Boys and Girls Club Teen Center, and the YMCA Arts Center Maker Spaces.

This program provides a unique opportunity for organizations to partner with RCCC to create meaningful and lasting contributions to the community. When funding is available, more information will be posted on this site. 

 

Our Current Project: Seventh Street Fountain Park

Seventh Street Fountain Park is a small public park at the northern gateway to Downtown Frederick. The park’s namesake fountain was erected in 1890, funded by community contributions to establish a fountain that is “an ornament to the city” everyone could feel pride in. Since then, the fountain and surrounding park have suffered from decades of disinvestment. In 2025, Downtown Frederick Partnership and the City of Frederick are eager to break ground on a transformative redevelopment, which will introduce usable green space, seating, a small stage, and new public artwork to the park.
The fountain will undergo an extensive restoration. The new artwork, which will sit opposite the restored fountain, will be a 19-foot-tall sculpture commissioned by Downtown Frederick Partnership and the AARCH Society (African American Resources Cultural and Heritage Society) to serve as a beacon for the community, honoring our shared humanity and commitment to building a more sustainable future. This park redevelopment project results from more than a decade of public engagement and community workshops and seeks to become a space that speaks to Frederick’s undertold and historically excluded histories with a modern, relevant approach.

YMCA MAKER SPACES

The Downtown Y Arts Center has a new Makerspace, Ceramics Studio, and Music/Video Production Studio thanks to our 2022 Next Big Project grant! In addition to funding, our Rotarians put together tables, supplies, bookshelves, and more to brings these spaces to life. Plus, you have to check out the awesome white board wall in the main maker space. These newly created spaces provide kids and adults with the opportunity to explore their creativity at a high level.

BAKER PARK BANDSHELL

The Baker Park Band Shell is able to put its best face forward, thanks to our renovation efforts with The City of Frederick back in the early 2000s. In addition to repairing wear and tear to the shell, changes to the shell include new wings faced with the same stone as used in the Carillon Tower, changing rooms for performers, an upgraded sound system and lighting, and bathrooms for the performers and the public.

SPLASHES OF HOPE

In celebration of RCCC’s 20th Anniversary, we partnered with Frederick Memorial Hospital (now Frederick Health) to place several murals in the Pediatric wing with partner, Splashes of Hope. These murals were to bring joy to the children and their families during some hard times. In 2023, after the Hospital renovated the Pediatric wing, the murals were reprinted onto canvas and placed in the new wing. The original pieces were donated to local nonprofits who serve children and families. 

PARTNERING AND APPLYING FOR FUNDING

RCCC reviewed its latest round of NEXT BIG PROJECT funding for 2024 in late 2024. Nonprofit organizations and public agencies are invited to submit a brick-and-mortar project that you would like to see completed in partnership with RCCC. The project will be judged on the following criteria; achievable (is the project well underway), sustainability (will adequate sustainable funding be available to continue the project), and visibility in our community in conjunction with the overall need. Projects that are located within the Frederick Historic District/City will be given preference.

RCCC is using Foundant to manage applications, like we do for our local and international grant applications. If your organization applied in the last two years for a RCCC Community Grant, you will use the same login credentials.
